My husband, myself and our two children are looking to move to Greensboro or the Winston-Salem area in the next month or so. My husband's job will be in the south of Greensboro and I'm a teacher that will eventually look for work for the next school year. Since we are moving from a very overcrowded city in Florida, we are looking to settle in suburban areas that are quiet and have nice sized lots. Which city would you recommend? Which have better school systems? Which neighborhoods are the best? And finally if we were to settle in Winston-Salem, how would the commute be to southern Greensboro? Thank you!!!
Greensboro is a very nice place with lots of nice neighborhoods and good schools. The northwest quadrant of the city is especially nice. Further out from there are the small towns of Summerfield and Oak Ridge. South of Greensboro there is a neighborhood called Forest Oaks you might want to check out.
One can certainly commute from Winston-Salem to G'boro, but I can't really see the need to do so. The 2 cities are very similar, and you might as well live closer to work.
I agree with Carolinadawg2. The best towns in the Greensboro area for good size lots, low crime, and the best public schools would be Oak Ridge, Summerfield, and Stokesdale. These towns serve the Northwest and Northern Guilford Schools. You can also find very nice neighborhoods in the city limits of Greensboro especially in the western, northwestern, northern sections of the city. Though the public schools may not be as good as the previously mentioned towns you could still opt for charter or even private school options. Greensboro is a very up and coming city and I think you will be pleasantly surprised how nice it is.
I lived in Greensboro for 5 years and now Winston Salem for 2. I do enjoy WS much more as the city is geared more toward 30+ crowd and seems a bit nicer. Much of Greensboro is dirty, run down or full of college kids and clubs. Having said that, there is more to do in Greensboro and it would be nice to have a short drive to work. If you chose Winston I would highly recommend the west end closer to pfafftown, lewisville, or Hanes mall, which would make your commute close to 45 minutes. I would suggest the Jamestown area which is affordable yet very nice. Kernersville is right between WS and Greensboro and is growing very quickly. That would allow you to enjoy each city with a short drive. Let us know if you have specific questions!
