I'm considering a job in Danville, VA. I'd rather live in North Carolina. Greensboro looks good, but what other areas should I consider?

How far are you willing to drive? What kind of area/neighborhood/house would you like? Whats your budget? Are schools an issue?

The north side of G'boro is probably your best bet...Summerfield and Oak Ridge. Its still going to be a long commute.

I second BC1960’s suggestion.

I live in the Danville area (originally from eastern NC) and I will say that you made the right call by looking to live in NC. The fact that I’m still here certainly isn’t by choice.

Danville electric rates second highest in state; most expensive among municipal-owned utilities | Business | godanriver.com

Only three schools in Danville accredited; superintendent says numbers don

The commute would be well worth it, IMO.

If you're going to work in Danville and live in NC, the key is having reasonable proximity to US29. That said there are quite a few neighborhoods in northern Greensboro with easy access to 29 that could keep your commute to 45 mins. Or, you could also consider Browns Summit which is even closer to Danville.

To add to the above, the stretch of US-29 between the US-29 Business exit south of Reidsville and the VA state line/Danville city limit is a 70mph freeway. So once you get on US-29, it’s smooth sailing.

(PS: Be sure to watch your speed while you’re in Danville or anywhere else in Virginia. Virginia does NOT take kindly to speeders and aren’t known for letting first-time offenders off with a warning. I learned that the hard way. Radar detectors are also illegal up here.)

Living close to Hwy. 29 will decrease the commute, however the schools in NE Guilford County are not good, if thats a consideration, and there isn't much there in the way of amenities like shopping and restaurants.

I don’t mind a long commute but want to keep it to an hour or less preferably. I have a high school aged child.

I'd recommend the Northern Guilford High School district. Its the closest quality high school to Danville and is about an hour's drive.

If that's the case then consider Northeast Guilford High as well. If the Danville job is more long term for you, then you can stomach a slightly "lesser" high school. After they graduate, you'll still have to make the commute everyday.

You could look at Hillsborough too. It’s about 50-55 min per google maps and Orange Co schools are pretty good.
