Cone Health will merge with Norfolk based Sentara Health. The combined headquarters will be in Norfolk with the Regional Headquarters in Greensboro. Naturally the main headquarters won't be in Greensboro. Ugggh.
Anytime there is some sort of a merger with a Triad company and another company outside of the area, the headquarters goes to the other area. Yeah it sucks. Greensboro could have been home to one of the largest healthcare systems in this region of the country.
Is this really that big of a deal aside from bragging right?
Norfolk has a substantial healthcare and medical network, so of course the headquarters would be there, it’s also a port city, The term regional headquarters is just that. Regional.
This is not Greensboro’s niche.
We’re more aerospace and advanced engineering/manufacturing, what we should really be talking about is how fast Honda jet Corp is expanding and growing, same with qorvo, etc.
Whenever one hospital gets bought out by another, or whenever a private medical practice becomes affiliated with a hospital, another issue to consider is how this could change the patient experience and fees for various visits and processes.

Well, I can't say very much good about Sentara.. coming from the Hampton Roads area myself. Not sure how they compare with Cone (who I have no experience with) but I can't see this improving the patient experience.

Based on my father's multiple experiences with Cone, I'd say its about the same.

The big loss is going to be the reduction in corporate and support jobs for the "losing" company. The "loser" doesn't need to be the one being "bought" - an executive that is from the losing legacy system may be in charge and lay off people from the other system.
I went through this a few years ago. The C level executive over our division was from the losing system, then about 70 people that weren't previously under her were laid off.
I'd say a lot of those corporate jobs (finance, IT, supply chain, etc.) will be eliminated from the Triad or the employees forced to move to Norfolk.

Yeah, I hate that for people affected by this. "Merger" usually means someone (or many) are losing jobs.
I hope it's greener pastures now in your case though.
