My family and I are moving from the midwest and I would like to know where would be better to live: Charlotte (Univeristy Area) or Greenville SC...I work in the medical field and my kids attend middle and high school...no babies. I like to live some where that is centrally located near stores..parks...resteraunts...etc...some place that has low crime...and that is diverse and well kept...similiar to the area I live now...the area I live now is a middle to upper middle class neighborhood...I do rent and I have sec 8 believe that or not so sec 8 doesn't always mean we have to live in the back hills of hell...so if anyone have any information I would greatly appreciate that. Before I close I just want to say I researched the University Area and I thought that was a better area but if I'm wrong please let me know.
I lived in Concord NC, which is basically bordered on the University area.
I wouldn't live there if someone paid my rent entirely. It's starting to get known as a problem area, especially around the University itself. If crime is a concern of yours, I'd stay away from Charlotte. All their figures are up, really up....home burglary up 18% as well as every other category of crime for the most part. This is of course only one opinion, but I think if people want to know this kind of stuff, go to Charlotte's website and look up the arrest record stats, or find local tv stations that have www sites, and read Charlotte dot com. You are also dealing with 2 cities of way different sizes.
Charlotte has a pretty hefty gang problem.
Yes I agree with the location. It is close to the mountains which I think will be a draw for people that arent attracted to all the I-85/385 development. It is far enough away but close enough at the same time. Rt 25 pretty much turns into a full fledged highway around TR heading north. Acreage is about 10k an acre. I dont think it will be anything like woodruff road (thats a good thing btw) but it will look quite a bit more grown up in 10 years
The northern parts of Greer and Taylors have mountain views, and there is Lake Robinson. Otherwise, there aren't many lakes in the general area. A longer drive will get you to Hartwell, Keowee, and Jocasee.
It's interesting seeing this old thread being brought up again. We bought our property north of Travelers Rest 10 years ago, and the growth of TR has been significant. Not obnoxious (yet), but significant. The thing I like best is that TR has managed to keep chain stores off of Main St., just having local businesses there, keeping the commercialism out on Hwy 25. It has a true old-time small town feel.
