Am I the only one that thinks August 17th is way too early for school to start?

Same time every year; nothing different. I know people in Georgia that started today!

Macon County Schools in NC started back on Aug. 1st. Had to go to court to get it finally taken care of. And even though they're starting early they're ending at the same time so early June. NC law actually says schools have to give kid's 10 weeks of summer vacation but the judge approved the districts decision to only give the kids 8 weeks this summer.

"back in the day" nobody started before labor day. my parents grew up in rural Ohio back in the 50s and 60s and districts knew better than to start school during county fair season haha. In fact to this day in Ohio county fair is still counted as a legit excuse for missing school haha. Someone has to unload the hogs :-)

Is it too early is all comparative to when you get out and how many small breaks you have in between. at the end of the day 180 days is still 180 days. i've always thought schools should start aug. 1st but give kids thanksgiving to new years completely off like some colleges do.

GreenvilleBuckeye, we also grew up in Ohio. I guess that's why I think the start date is way to early here!

sting,

agreed. i remember back home each fall we'd play at least the first football game of the season before school had even gone back.

I'm certain they start in the middle of August because it's such a lovely, cooler time of year-- no, scrach that.
OK, it's because of all the snow days to make up... no, scratch that, too.
They start early because of the highest level of education, placing South Carolina at # 48... er, no, scratch that too.
They start early so they can get out before June... oh, nope. Scrach that.

Come to think of it, just WHY THE #$%& DO they start so early?
Tech Charter High started on August 8. Zheesh! (But they always rank at the top in education and Graduation, so no real complaint there.)

That start date allows high school graduation(s) to take place in the first week of June rather than later that month.
