My wife and I want to plan a vacation, and to check out the Clemson, Seneca and Pendleton area for possible future retirement. If we wanted to stay on a lake for about a week, where do you recommend we stay? Hopefully somewhere with boat and/or kayak rentals. Is a cabin our best bet? We want to be close enough to check out Lakes Hartwell, Keowee, and Jocassee. Thanks.

Can't help you on most things, but while in Pendleton, do check out My Village Baker - wonderful baked goods!!!!! Cafe there too, food was good.

Village Baker - Home

If it's wasn't so dang far I'd be there more often.

I think your best bet is going to be a lake house rental. I know you can rent boats and jet skis on Hartwell.

Boat Rentals, Boat Sales and Slip Rentals in Georgia - Harbor Light Marina - Lake Hartwell, GA on Lake Hartwell (within eyesight of the SC Hwy 11 exit on I-85) has pontoon and ski boat/runabout rentals, as does Lake Keowee Marina | Home. Lake Jocassee has no marinas. About This Park - Devils Fork State Park - South Carolina State Parks has a nice boat launch and wonderful villas for rent right on Lake Jocassee..

Agree with above - check out VRBO/Upcountry SC (http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/south-carolina/upcountry - broken link) for house rentals, especially if you are staying for a week. I recommend renting a house on Lake Keowee.

IMO, aesthetic appeal/quality of the lake: Lake Jocasse > Lake Keowee > Lake Hartwell. Note that Lake Jocasee is quite remote and there are very few homes on this lake.
