Have a freshman that we have had a round with local school about absences due to medical condition (we have notes). Wanting to pull him from school ASAP and enroll in homeschool. Not sure where or how to begin, help please??? We live in the Simpsonville area....
We have three ways to homeschool here in SC. The most popular (and easy) way is option #3: Just sign up with an accountability association, and you are now homeschooling. You can sign up for most online, and pay the fee. They will take care of notifying your school.
Here's a link to the state homeschooling organization, where you can read up on laws, tips, advice and find an accountability association. They do not have to be in our area, they can be anywhere in SC.
You may also want to consider the virtual public schools for next fall. SCVCS (South Carolina Virtual Charter School) is a great option for high school. South Carolina Virtual Charter School | South Carolina Virtual Charter School - We Ignite your Child's Mind They are enrolling now, so you may want to do that, for next fall, and at least get enrolled. If you decided after doing your research, that you'd prefer to do traditional homeschooling, you can still do that.
My wife homeschools our daughter in the K-12 program for middle school. K-12 is a virtual school as mentioned above. It's a great, very challenging program. We are amazed at the level she is learning is way beyond what her peers are learning in the local brick and mortar schools. She will be taking PASS testing shortly just like the regular public school students.
We have been very happy with K-12, they send you all your books and study materials. There are daily online classes where the student needs to be online and speaking to the teacher, but that's only about 20% of your day. The rest of the day is doing assignments, etc. So there is some flexibility there. Another program is Connections Academy.
If you want total flexibility, then regular home school is what you are looking for. There are plenty of programs out there, but you will need to buy the books and teach the program to your student. There are a lot of support groups in this area and home schooling is growing in popularity by leaps and bounds.
One stat I heard that Home Schoolers consistently score higher on SAT exams than their public school counterparts!
I think the advantage to home school is every outing - whether it is the grocery store or a park - can be used toward course credits. Other states do not have a "virtual school" where teachers are present. One of the advantages to this is school time is not 9-3 Mon - Fri. It is flexible which is probably what the OP needs.
Home schoolers are no tisolated. Most home school organizations plan outings and group meetings all year and provide support for the parent as well as the student.

Here is another option for SC virtual online school. I've been reading reviews and it seems to fair better than K12 does. Plus, it also makes a point of stating they have get togethers for their students.
Good luck to you! Free Online Public School from Home: South Carolina Connections Academy
Connections Academy and K12.com are both virtual public schools. It's a matter of opinion, really on which is "best". It's like saying I like Coke while you like Pepsi.
You'd want to take a look at both, review their sample lessons, look at the curriculum they offer, etc, and see which is would be best for your child.
But it's a great option for some that are not ready or able to do traditional homeschooling, especially in high school where credits, transcripts are so important.

Very good advice. We looked hard at both and liked parts of both programs. We are currently in K-12 and are happy, but I think either one is a great choice if you are looking into a virtual school.
