I am moving back home to SC. I currently live in California. I'll be driving and will leave August 1st. My CA truck registration expires on July 31st. In order to have current registration after that date, I will need to get a smog check and pay the renewal which is about $350.

Then, within 45 days of my arrival in SC, I will be required to register my truck there, and pay whatever use tax is applicable. Does anyone know if it is possible for me to send my truck title (I own it outright, no liens)
to a family member in SC and have them obtain my new SC plates and send them to me in CA? Thus avoiding the CA renewal?

If I sent a notarized power of attorney would this be possible to do, or do I have to physically be in SC with established residency. Or.....is this just a nutty idea altogether.

I hate the idea of giving the state of California one more cent of my hard earned money. I can't wait to get back home after 35 years in this insane state.

Thanks.

I would call. They are probably going to want some form of mail showing that you live in SC unless you temporarily use your family's address. Otherwise, I don' see it being a problem.
