Just casually driving around, I haven't seen any block homes, but I tend to look at new construction since I'm currently building my own house. Most houses I see are stick built on a crawl space. Why the question? I lived in one of those houses in FL, and hated it. Poor insulation, and the slab floor is very hard on your back and feet. In FL, they run the plumbing under the slab, so if a pipe fails, or you want to re-configure the plumbing, you have to cut the slab. They do tend to block out outside noises, though.

We are in the process of building a home with Mungo. Stick built on slab.

We did look around at many builders in the area that were in the 200-300k range. What we found was that most were defaulting to slab/stick built. Some lots supported crawl space, taller - what I might call "bent over space", and walk out basements. All at additional cost.

We did ask about putting in a basement in a flat lot and the cost was quite high - 30-40k. Coming from NY State where basements are standard - this seemed high comparing houses of similar cost/sqft here. For the same cost as the Mungo house we are building, in NYS we would have had a basement included. The like for like comparison is hard to do as our default lots here are huge compared to what was offered in the Greenville area.

Tons of homes on slab with no basement, but hardly any homes with block and stucco (thank god, it's one of the reasons we moved out of FL, block and stucco homes look ugly).

Because I dont like the look of all that vinyl siding. block is much more sturdy than wood frame . and i can build a home with block and stucco on slab with my eyes closed, i just dont know much about basements and crawl spaces. homes in FL are built like a tank. I see some homes up there that just look like they are not built quite as good. thats all, not knocking, just an observation.

this would be for way down the road, just curious now.

so aside from the block/stucco, since it seems to be unpopular there, how many (a percentage) are built on a slab foundation? thanks.

i like brick, and i dont mind vinyl as long as its not the entire house. i guess my point is i'd rather build with materials i'm so familiar with. for one day.

I built our house out of ICF- much stronger than block, and R-24 walls. You still have to put an exterior finish, but just about any finish can be done. I did Hardi. ICF materials are more than block, of course, but it's easy to do, and it's nice having such a comfortable home. I'm too old to hump concrete blocks around!
