There should be a class to teach balancing a checkbook. I am amazed at how many adults don't have a clue. People write a check for more than they have in their account, and them blame the bank for not letting them know. You cannot make up some of the excuses we hear. It's called simple math, folks.

I agree parents could teach it but what about the parents that don't teach it? One other class that I think should be required is learning about doing your taxes, budgeting, writing a check, writing a resume, etc. Life skills is something everyone will need to use in life.

Is this not taught in economics and accounting?

I had both of those classes in middle school...and I'm in my late 20s. However this was up north.

I was just telling someone that schools need to teach kids finances in high school. Kids get out of school and have no idea how to budget or write a check.

South Carolina Department of Education is long since promoted financial literacy programs. "Financial literacy instruction shall be incorporated within current courses throughout the state in accordance with The Financial Literacy Instruction Act (59-29-410) established to amend Chapter 29, Title 59, Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976." However, local school boards have been unwilling to spend the money to provide such education, and the state has been unwilling to enforce the statute. Talk is cheap; education is priceless.
