Just received word from the City of Mauldin. No more recycling of glass?!! Starting on March 21st, they will not be accepting glass for recycling. Sad news. I always thought glass was a renewable resource and a far sight better that Plastic and Styrofoam!! Goodness sake, the one packaging product that has been the best for years, is now taking a back seat to Plastic and Plastic Products. I believe that SC should start a refund program for Glass beverage bottles, as a way to do something in the effort to recycle. JMHO.

This was mentioned on here not long ago. I think the entire county has dropped glass recycling. The problem is money; it costs more to recycle glass than it is worth. The county we came from in FL stopped taking glass for recycling at least 15 years ago. It's frustrating to send it to the landfill, but at least it's pretty innocuous stuff.

My private trash picker-upper also notified us they are no longer recycling glass. They said there used to be two facilities in Greenville, and the first stopped recycling glass, so they switched to the other, and then that one stopped recycling glass. It's apparently not cost-efficient to recycle glass.

Some recycled glass containers are not able to be used in the manufacture of new glass bottles and jars or to make fiberglass. This may be because there is too much contamination or the recycled glass pieces are too small to meet manufacturing specifications. Or, it may be that there is not a nearby market for bottle-to-bottle recycling.

As of todays date.....a TON of glass is worth about FIVE DOLLARS.

Does that seem like it is a material that any profit driven company is going to bother with. Its a waste of time.

On the other hand, aluminium IS worth money, at about $1500 a TON. Even pop cans are worth 55 cents a pound.

does it mean we are unable to use glass products in the nearby future? there are companies providing services for plastic recycling but is there no company for glass recycling now?

As long as energy prices are low and space is freely available in landfills, glass recycling will not be an attractive options.
