Trump is now targeting BMW. Tribalism at its finest. The upstate was deep red, all of it, yet you have a lot of international production going on up there. I guess the business community up there needs to do a better job educating that trade is good for SC. The good ol boys probably don't care though. They love Trump come hell or high water!
Why is the upstate worried? BMW in Spartanburg isn't going anywhere and BMW said they would still build cars in Mexico and ship to the US despite tariffs. So we will see how that works out. Too early to tell right now, so I wouldn't get all worked up about it.
Don't forget, only Congress can pass this kind of tariff.

BMW says that it will sell the cars it makes in Mexico all over the world, including in the United States, regardless of Trump's plan to impose a tarriff on any Mexican-built car that come into the U.S.
BMW's largest plant in the world is in Spartanburg, S.C., that employs 8,800 workers. The facility assembled more than 400,000 X model crossover vehicles last year, 70% of which were shipped to other countries. In fact, BMW is the largest U.S. exporter of cars.
"The BMW Group is at home in the USA," said the company's statement.
BMW builds far more cars at its U.S. plant than it sells here. In 2016 it sold 288,000 in the U.S.
And GM also said it was in the works LONG before Trump. That is Trump had nothing to do with it.
If Trump actually violates treaties without renegotiating them, there could be major fallout. Of course I believe the Republicans plan to start impeachment hearings ASAP. They have enough to impeach him on and Pence is their man. Pence and Ryan. Yep. I hope the dems don't fall for it and force them to live with him.
it is likely that BMW would not have come to the Upstate if SC did not have right to work laws. that a big competitive advantage that SC has for luring new companies.

It probably was in the works for a while, but that wasn't mentioned in the NY Times article.

General Motors said on Tuesday that it would invest $1 billion in its American factories tied to 1,500 jobs, becoming the latest automaker to respond to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s call to bolster manufacturing in the United States.
I read the NY Times article and attached a link to the one where they said their plans are years in advance. Trump gets no credit for these Mexico jobs, sorry. The first one he took credit for is going to cost the taxpayers a pretty penny.

Right to work helped, but the land and tax breaks, plus easy access to Port of Charleston via 26, and Carroll's persistence, were a huge driving force.
We beat out Nebraska and their governor complained because it's not his fault he couldn't move the state to the Atlantic Ocean.
if proximity to a port was a big factor, it is odd that Nebraska was the runner up.
in response to the OP, I don't agree with the characterization of DJT as 'anti-trade', or the characterization of DJT supporters as 'good ol boys'. I don't think a position on trade, right or wrong, is evidence that a person is a 'good ol boy'.

The port was a big factor in us ultimately winning the plant in the end. BMW didn't say it was apart of the criteria to be considered.
