Keep Sabal Homes in mind as well. They build in Greer and Travelers Rest (though only in their own communities), and my wife and I have had a tremendous experience working with them with our home in Simpsonville.
I helped some clients build an SK home about a year ago. The home turned out beautifully, but there were many issues along the way. Don't know if it was related just to that community, project manager, and/or onsite agent, but it was a very trying experience. Have had no issues thus far with the others.
I am watching Ryan homes throw up house after house behind me. They come in kit form and are in the dry in a matter of days after the slab is poured. No way I would have one.
So out of the three home builders I have inquired about, I heard negatives on every one if them. I would assume there would be benefits of buying new but that doesn't appear so here.
SK builders in my experience builds a good home; you or your agent, just has to be on top of them. This is true of the other builders as well. My son's Ryan home was well-built. Important to have a pre-drywall inspection as well as a final one.
Recently we had some settling issues with the walls inside our house. We contacted upstatestructuralrepair.com for consultation and remedial work. They were thorough with their inspection and pointed out several issues which they remediated.
During our conversations he intimated that most of the houses he has worked on in this area are poorly engineered. Of all the builders, Ryan Home were the best that he has seen from the viewpoint of the cellar or crawl space to the framing of the floor joists.
