Hey friends! I had another question about a possible move to Greenville from Denver.
I know there has been mention of traffic getting worse. I'm sure it's all relative. In Denver it feels like rush hour all day, every day, except maybe Sunday.
My questions are:
1) What neighborhood would be best to live in where traffic driving to downtown and to the mountains (let's say Asheville) isn't bad, if this exists?
2) What neighborhood would be best to live in if I like to be able to walk to coffee shops, restaurants and local stores? I know downtown is one. Any others that might be more affordable and meet criteria #1. A nearby park would be preferable too.
I usually like to rent new apartments at least when I first move to a new city. So a neighborhood with newer apartments is preferable.
I work for myself and from home/coffee shops, which is why I like to be able to walk to places. Local places, not chains. Since I work from home, I can usually afford peak traffic times.
Unless you are living in the downtown of Greenville, Greer, Fountain Inn, Simpsonville, or Travelers Rest, there are not many walkable locations for local shopping and dining.
If I wanted to drive to downtown and to the mountains, I would be looking at the City of Travelers Rest or the Berea community.
I think Traveler's Rest (TR) would give you the best of both worlds that you are looking for. Plus the Swamp Rabbit Trail (SRT) goes right through downtown TR then all the way to downtown Greenville.
Thank you! I will definitely check out Traveler's Rest on my visit! Sounds like a cool little town, plus I like the idea of being able to bike on the trail there from Greenville.
While I was in Greenville last spring, I ran into a guy I knew from Illinois at the Orthodox Church I visited. He moved to Greenville to care for his parents. After church, he and I along with the priest and two other guys met at Swamp Rabbit Brewery in Travelers Rest. A lot of people there having a good time on a Sunday afternoon. I know Dr. Mac Arnold has his Cornbread and Collard Greens blues festival there, and there are other musical events too. The Travelers Rest Fest is coming up in a few days. It is indeed a nice little town, and it's apparently a big growth area - two of the guys I was with live in Travelers Rest, and one was building a new house. They said it's a good place to get in on now, but prices were starting to rise around TR.
You're also close to Furman University, and there are often lectures, concerts, and events happening there. Drive to downtown is about 10 miles. It's a bit out of the way for my taste, but it would be a great place for someone who wants to be closer to the mountains.
The two things that have been a drag on development in Travelers Rest are that the schools aren't great in that area and it isn't convenient to the major shopping areas of Greenville. I really wish there was a good road that connected US 25 North of Travelers Rest back to I-85 without a ton of redlights and cross traffic. Both Whitehorse Road and Poinsett Hwy. tend to flow very smoothly due to all of the redlights.
