daniel, the upstate IMO is generally nicer and wealthier than any other part of south carolina, besides any land on the coast, of course. In the upstate there are more jobs, the summers are milder, the lakes are cleaner, the schools are better. And all this is coming from someone who grew up in the lowcountry.

But, be prepared for ultra-conservativism. SC as a whole is obviously a 'red state', but the greenville area is often called "The Buckle on the Bible Belt". Think Bob Jones University, Furman, Southern Baptists, NASCAR, Jesse Jackson, Aaron Tippin - if you don't know what those things are, I'd suggest you do some research! Not that there's anything wrong with that lifestyle and point of view, I just feel that you (and others thinking about G-Vegas) should be aware of this.

Wow, this is interesting to me. My husband and I (plus 2 or our 3 grown children) are planning on relocating to G-Ville area this summer from Massachusetts. We are not church members or any church. We are very hopeful that there are other people in the area who do not center their lives on church. The Greenville area is attractive to us because of the cultural opportunities it seems to offer. In addition, we love the outdoors and it seems as if the area has plenty to offer that way too. We're not huge shoppers, would love to spend a sunny day outside walking rather than shopping. I have been very concerned about the "bible belt" reputation of the southern states. I certainly am not against people who follow a religion, but I don't want to be looked down at because I'm not a follower. Is there any hope? You seem to imply there isn't. Coming from "the bluest state" as Massachusetts is referred to, I don't mind a more conservative area, as long as it's not "ultra" or backwards. Would love to hear more voices on this topic, it's a HUGE move for us (my husband has family in Asheville). Thanks for any information you can offer.

I've grown up here and yes, I agree with what anonymous said. Greenville is conservative, Baptist and yes, redneck. I am very honored to be a child of God, a redneck, a Baptist and conservative are darn proud of it! I'm always amazed at those who move to this south and think its like a "mini" NY or something. Whadup people???

Greenville itself is very varied in its population and outlooks, esp downtown. Even in the burbs, you'll meet people from all over, with all kinds of philosophies. While one may predominate, it doesn't dominate. I'd barely know Bob Jones U. was even here if I didn't see occasional mentions of it on this board!

I have lived in Simpsonville all my life and love it still. We travel a good bit and always looked foward to coming back to Simpleville. It is not a perfect town but we think it is close. Be sure and check out Heritage Park in town if you come to visit.

Moved to Greenville from out of state, I'm a gay man, partnered and we've never really noticed any issues. We love it here! Greenville is no different than most every other US city, and in many ways better. The large influx of Europeans with BMW, Michelin and all their spinoff industries, obviously tempers the overall attitude.

As I usually suggest to people, check out neighborhoods on www.journalhomes.com. I do not think you will have a problem at all. I have lived here since 1975 & people do not come up and ask me if I go to church. Yes, we do live in the bible belt. They serve alcohol on Sunday in certain areas but just do like most and buy your Sunday beer on Saturday night. You would be surprised at the number of closet drinkers here. I do not think most people are red-neck or prejudiced. Everyone I know who lives in Simpsonville seems to love it and I have helped 4 families from PA move there. In your price range you should be able to find a nice neighborhood with outdoor walking trails and such.

Just bought a home end of Jan. after living in SOFLA (Gables, Kendall) my entire life, born and raised. We are doing a slow transition up there, so while not an expert on the area at all, I can tell you from my perspective, my views and what (little) knowledge I do have about the area, this from physically going up there and having looked for a home over a years time and what I did learn.

Who knows, maybe you're my neighbor And yes, NO HURRICANE INS NEEDED!!!!

P/M me if interested.
