I moved here in Dec. and waited to go to the DMV. Bad move on my part!
You are allowed 90 days to change over your drivers license and 45 days for plates. Obviously, I am way over that, but me being the naive person I can be thought I would probably just get a verbal reprimand. Nope! I had to pay a $75.00 late fee for my plate. At least my vehicle property tax was low, less than $100.00. I didn't get my drivers license as I didn't have a notarized copy of my divorce decree, but I expect I will have to pay a penalty for that too.
So the moral of the story is............. Don't put off going to the DMV!
I didn't have any problems like that when I moved here. I waited until my Florida vehicle registration expired to switch it to SC (along with my driver's license), and it was all good. This was about 2 years ago or so.
On the bright side, I'm not sure I got charged for the plate! According to the DMV website, it's $30.00 but there is no charge on my receipt for that amount.
I don't think they ever asked me when I went to the DMV, I even received a speeding ticket well after 90 days with my NY plates still on, the cop gave me a warning about it and let me slide
Funny story, shortly after the ticket I got my plates changed, I got pulled over again for speeding(yeah I have a heavy foot) and was arrested for a suspended license, NY suspended my license for not turning in my plates and I had to spend the night in jail in Greenwood! long story short I got out the next day, flew to NY and turned in my plates, you know what they charged me? 2 bucks, I got thrown in jail over a $2 fine! lol good story though, wasn't funny at the time but makes me laugh now.
LOL Things like that are only funny with a bit of distance!
There was a space on the form for the plate that asked when I started operating the vehicle in SC.
