My wife and I are thinking about moving to the Greenville area (Greer, Spartensburg). We currently live north of Atlanta (Canton) and are seeking a change. We have read some good things about the area but wanted to get some user feed back in this forum. We are in our middle 30's and looking for a place that feels more like home, some where we can put down some roots. My wife is a marketing professional and I work in finance. We know this is not the best time to move but we are doing our research for when the time is right.
We were wondering if you could share your thoughts on the area in terms of crime, schooling, hospitals, job market, airport, traffic, housing, best time to visit ect. Any sort of information that you feel would be useful in doing our research.
Have you spent much time looking through the Greenville area threads already existing on the forum? You might find a lot of info already hashed out about your questions.
Personally I think the Greenville area is a great place to set down some roots--and it looks like more and more people are coming to realize this. You've got some great schools in the area that are consistently ranked, an airport that serves its purpose for this metro (plus you're close to Charlotte-Douglas), there are some outstanding hospital facilities in the Upstate from a handful or more of hospital systems, and I bet if you're used to Atlanta traffic then you will quite enjoy Greenville traffic--even if it is getting pretty bad by some of our standards.
Not sure what kind of marketing work your wife does...but there is a burgeoning PR industry in Greenville, and Greenville has been noted for the advertising industry persence (for a city this size). Plus online marketing firms have been making a presence for themselves.
Thank you for your response. I have gone thru several of the threads and they have been very informative. I will continue to read up on some of the existing threads to see what other information is out there. Thanks again.
The Greer area is beautiful and great schools! It's one of the fastest growing area in SC! We have been here for six years and watch it grow! We are presently selling our home in Greer, Sc! We have totally redone it from the time we moved here! We put in a pool about two years ago with full patio deck! New paint job on top and bottom floors of the house! If you're still in the market for a home this would be a steal at $275,000 - just about 3,000 sqft! 4 Bedrooms and 2 and a half baths!
We find Canton to be nice, but it doesn't offer us what we are looking for. We would like to be closer to shopping, restaurants, easier commutes, more job opportunities. We like what we see in the pictures and what people have to say in this forum about the Greenville area. We plan on visiting up there soon and hopefully we can make the move. If we like what we see in person. We have a house to sell so it could be tuff.
Hope the housing market is good for you guys (both there & here)! For a city its size, there are quite a few housing options from Downtown condos to older in-town neighborhoods, to cozy, shaded townhome communities, to the whole gamut of suburban development found in most metro areas (from cookie-cutter developments to new-urban "towns" like Griffin Park and Acadia).
It seems like a great place to be, that is what we are hoping. Housing and a job for my wife will be the big factors. I can work from home. Any areas, developments or things we might want to look at and consider?

You'll need to put your main criteria out there for anyone to really advise. As I said, there's a wide variety of options available. Just depends on what's most important to you guys.
