We will be very close to the river...I have experienced the worst of the summer humidity there and it was pretty bad but I've been there other times when the humidity was bearable....the Greenville area seems to have lots of positive things going for it...something we will have to consider if KY ends up not working out.

The whole crime statistic issue comes up frequently, and I think the problem comes from extremes of population skewing the real-world impact of it. New York City has a very low murder rate per capita, but there are still 600 murders a year there! If you had one murder in a town of 10 people, the murder rate would be 10%! I have noticed in reading the local paper (greenvilleonline) that there seems to be a lot of domestic violence, and that much of the crime occurs in a few select neighborhoods. Domestic violence, tragic as it is, doesn't usually involve anyone but the family members (as long as you don't try to break it up), and I've known my whole life that every town has areas you don't want to go to. If you go to the Greenville County GIS site, you can look up crime maps, and you'll pretty quickly see where to avoid. Our current location in West Central FL has a very low crime rate per capita, but it seems like there is at least one murder per day in the area. I'll take my chances in Greenville County anytime.

How is the health care industry in the Greenville area? I work in the field and hope to find a good job to support myself & my kids.
Which area has the best schools? I have three young children.
So far, everything I've read about Greenville sounds great!
For the first time I think I may have hope of finding a truly nice place to live, as we want to get out of S. Florida.

The medical industry is booming in the Upstate and we have several rapidly growing hospitals right here in the Greenville metro. I know quite a few medical professionals and they really enjoy living and working here as well.

Here is a list of the main hospital systems located in the area:

What about the areas of Anderson and Belton? Also, if the coast of SC gets a hurricane, is there any impact in the Greenville/Anderson area? I'm not sure if the inland areas would be affected.

Anderson is not considered a "suburb" of Greenville, much in the same manner that Spartanburg is not a "suburb" of Greenville. Anderson has its own downtown with its own shopping corridors, mass transit, and health system, though it is much smaller than Greenville. People living in Belton probably travel to Anderson before Greenville, unless they have a need or desire to go to Greenville. I would definitely go to Greenville for most things, but for immediate needs only, there would be little point in making the trip.

If a hurricane makes landfall in SC, we may have rain bands with minor wind gusts, but nothing at all to be worried about. Actually, despite the warm & humid tropical air it brings us, the rain is usually very welcome here. Greenville has been used as a place of refuge by lowcountry residents during major hurricanes in the past, so hotels are usually booked full during those days.
