We're about to start building our home in TR & I'm looking at what I want to do as my 2nd (or 3rd) career when I relocate. One possibility is an alternative teaching certificate via the PACE program. I just took the online self-test to see if I qualify, but the results are confusing.

I'm in my mid-50's and have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from an accredited (and well regarded) school. I was a professor at that same institution until my mid-30's, so I have quite a bit of teaching experience, but no formal training in pedagogy.

In 1990, I moved to Houston to work for the agency most closely associated with this city I now have 20 years under my belt in the "real world" and have been a project manager for many projects that have produced human certified flight hardware. I guess I'm one of those who not only could teach but could, also, do.

I feel that I could teach either mathematics or science very effectively and have such an "interesting" background that I could inspire young people in an area, math and/or science, where our country and SC are in desperate need of teachers. The problem is that my degrees are in engineering and not math or science. I think I might be OK for Secondary Mathematics (but not Middle Mathematics???) because Engineering is listed as a corresponding degree. However, the only corresponding degree for Secondary Physics is Physics. Even though I have taught quantum mechanics to upper level undergrads, my degrees are in Engineering and not Physics.

Has anyone been through the PACE program or have some knowledge of it? Before I make a fool of myself calling the SC DoE, I'd like to know if there is some "flexibilty" in their requirements to accommodate an individual who feels that they are capable of imparting the subject matter to students. Thanks for any tips y'all can pass along.

First of all, why do posters feel the need to say "y'all" just because we are from the south.

Second, I don't think that under the PACE rules you would qualify anyway right now because of this.

Employment as a teacher of record in a South Carolina public school district...which I believe says that you have to have a valid SC teaching certificate also. Maybe not, but that's how I interpret this.

I used "y'all" because I'm from TX and in TX we think its kinda friendly-like to sprinkle a few "y'all's" and even some "all y'all's" into our conversation. I will try to remove that word from my vocabulary when I move to TR. If I managed to stop saying "youse guys" when I moved from NJ to TX, then I'm sure I can suppress my tendency to say "y'all" going from TX to SC. I'm surprised that "y'all" is not used in SC as my DH was born and grew up in NC just 15 miles from the SC border and he says "y'all" quite frequently.

I'm sorry, but the link you provided didn't work. However, from the way you described your interpretation of the PACE requirements, the SC Legislature has created something of a Catch 22. If the purpose of PACE is to provide candidates with academic and work experience in critical needs areas such as mathematics and science an alternate path to a teaching certificate, then there seems to be little point in requiring such a candidate to already have a teaching certificate in order to participate in the program.

Can anyone provide some illumination to this conundrum?

Thanks - Jo Ann

P.S. - Aren't y'all proud of me? I manage to write that whole 2nd paragraph by my lil' ol' self and not use "y'all" even once!

Troll much? Someone asks a legitimate question, and your first response is to criticize the way they talk? At least y'all got around to answering the question......
