All of Greenville is bad, it is all run by gangsters and hoodlums. If you value your life dont venture outside of your home. I hope that question was a joke.

I haven't never seen any gangs or experienced any violence first hand since I have been here. Not to say it doesn't exist(i'm not naive or anything, I realize there is plenty of crime in greenville), but I think the problem is on a much smaller scale if compared to most cities. Inside Greenville city I think there are a few bad areas, but you would be better off coming to visit to find that out yourself, it is all relative in my opinion anyway

I think you are thinking of Greenville as you would a major city, and its really not. its pretty small and the downtown area is very safe IMO.

There are some areas you probably would want to avoid, although there are far more safe areas. As Noodles said above, it is possible to live here and never experience any violent crimes, gang problems, etc. If it weren't for the news I would rarely hear about crime simply because it doesn't happen around the areas of town I live and work.

A few areas you may want to avoid are:
-West Greenville (not to be confused with the West End of downtown, which is safe)
-near the end of Augusta St where it meets I-85 (Southside High School area)
-some areas around the old Parker High School

There are others, but these are the areas I'm most familiar with. I find myself in West G'ville quite a bit with my camera and have never had problems...I do avoid it at night though. I've only been to the Southside High area once or twice and don't plan on returning. The last time I was there was a few years ago for a football game (g'ville vs. southside) and I left at halftime because the gunshots we heard weren't exactly making me comfortable. My last two years at Greenville High were spent at the old Parker High because of renovations to our school. This is, again, an area I feel safe in during the day but I would usually avoid it at night.

West greenville is actually getting better now that all the artist spaces have moved into the neighborhood, but I agree I wouldn't wander around at night, its the only place i've seen ACTUAL gang graffiti in greenville.

Another area I thought was worth mentioning is Berea. Although I technically live in Berea, its a poorer area and as a result of that I'm pretty sure we see more crime out here than many places. I live kinda out of the way though (border of pickens and greenville)so it doesn't effect me as much, which I'm grateful for.

It seems that Greenville is safe. Why does Columbia have higher crime than the upstate. It seems as if they have more gangs and crime than the rest of the state. Why is that?
