Have you known someone who passed away on their birthdate? it may sound strange to see them die on their birthday, when their birthday is the day to celebrate, how often does it happen when people die on their birthdates? It looks and seems rare for someone to die on their birthday.

Funerals are sometimes called a "Celebration of Life."

Statistically speaking, I believe the odds of dying on your birthday are 1 out of 365. Except on leap year, when they are better at 1 out of 366.

i would bet the statistic is much higher that people commit suicide on their birthdays more than die of some natural cause ...now i wait for someone to tell me the thread is not about suicide .. well suicide is dying .

My father in law died on his 80th birthday. He had bone cancer and I believe he willed himself to make it to 80 then he just let go.

Technically, there is a 1/365 chance of someone dying naturally on their birthday, HOWEVER, I think there are two factors that would improve those odds:

1. Suicide: someone who is feeling suicidal near their birthday may well decide "Well, it's My day, let's make it count" or whatever. Also, someone dying of a disease such as cancer who will never get better, may decide to take matters into their own hands and their birthday would have a significant chance of being the day they chose for said "termination", I think.

2. "Will to live"--I don't know how "proven" this is in medicine, but someone dying of a long-term disease can often "will themselves to hang in there" for a special occasion, which could include their birthday.

I do read obituaries and tend to notice when someone dies near their birthday; if it was a few days before, I usually think "Oh no, they didn't make it to their Nth birthday", though it seems in my non-statistical memory that more often, they die a few days after their birthday, perhaps out of "hanging in there", I dunno.

It would be more interesting to separate the birthday deaths into suicide and non-suicide, although of course a lot of times suicides are not recorded as such.

I thought that the reference to suicide was actually a very interesting point that I hadn't considered. So I did a little googling.

In fact, dying on one's birthday is statistically more likely for several reasons, including (but not limited to) suicide. There was a recent study about it, which is summarized in this article: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/worl...icle-1.1095279
