Well, let some time pass & see how things pan out. Maybe plan a trip for Thanksgiving, when it won't be too hot.
Also remember that just a few generations ago, people only heard from their families by letter post. So new immigrants from other countries never saw their parents again & those parents never met their grandkids & photos were not the norm back them either. So be thankful for those wonderful video & zoom calls.
As long as the gks know they are always welcome with you, it's all good.
Thank you, evening sun. We do want to visit. However, right now we don't know when it will happen due to their new state requiring out-of-staters to quarantine for 2 weeks once there. You are correct regarding the past. My mother, aunt and uncle never met their grandparents due to the distance.

Thank you, Kathryn. We definitely plan to stay put.
They stopped by on their way out west. Originally, they were just going to stay one night but extended it to 2 nights. We took them out to dinner both nights. During the day, we sat around and talked.
I worried that I would be in tears the whole time they were visiting. However, something they said without prompting was a big help. They want to come back east. Each of the kids and their Dad said that more than once.
When it was time for them to go to their hotel to have a good sleep before heading out, I teared up. As we hugged, I told them I loved them and they said the same to me. They headed out the door, then turned back for second hugs. One of them said "See you soon". Only after we closed the door, did I cry.
Yes, we will visit them after the holidays. In fact, the kids were telling their Dad that as soon as he has vacation time at his new job, they want to visit us.
We'll see how things go for us all.
Thank you to all who were supportive and caring in this thread. I really appreciated it.
to see how you are....and if you've been in touch with your grandchildren and how they are doing?
Thank you for asking, Bette!
Well...when they got to son-in-law's mother's house, he discovered that she wasn't truthful when she said she cleaned out her hoard. He was shocked at the condition of the house. Also, she wasn't truthful when she said there were enough beds for them. They ended up staying in a hotel that night. A cousin allowed them to stay with her until he found a place to live.
As I expected, he discovered that rents had skyrocketed in recent times. Long story short, he found an apartment and had to pay way more in rent than he was paying before they moved. The kids started school 2 weeks late and the schools they are attending aren't the greatest...
We'll see how things go for them.
