1911 was the year it was adopted by the Army, the M stands for March, thus it's designation of m1911
I'm not so sure about that. Everything in the military is designated with an "M" for mark, e.g. Mark 1 Mod 2. (Mod = modification) If it was adopted in the month of March it's a coincidence.

M16... M1 Abrams, etc.
True, but every show/site I've seen says the m is for March, we all know how accurate the media/web can be though.
Even though this topic is widely debated one thing still stands clear. A 1911 is like a beautiful woman. A joy to look at and even better to hold.
Can't argue with that, Only reason I haven't got one yet is I can't really afford to blow the money right now on something that would be purely a range gun, but soon... very soon

I was thinking the same thought. M97, M12, M30. I think the M merely stands for Military.

Plenty of fine shootin' 1911's in the 500-600 dollar range. Especially if you pickup a quality used 1911 then you can get some real value. I sold a rifle to help with the purchase of my TRP. Here's hoping sooner rather than later for you.
