Obama executive actions to reduce gun violence

[quote]President Obama released 23 executive actions in an attempt to reduce gun violence in the wake of the Newtown shooting.

Today, the President is announcing that he and the administration will:

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
More In Guns

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

11. Nominate an ATF director.

12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.

13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.

23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

The most drastic effect of the order will be:

1.) background checks for every firearm sale, which indirectly necessitates registration.
4.) Attorney general can now define which citizens can own firearms (see 'terrorist threat')
16. & 17.) Blatant removal of the physician-patient privilege and confidentiality

In addition, these orders will increase government costs thorough larger police forces, officers at schools, funding of background check centers, additional ATF officers.

I would like to see the surveys he mentioned stating the majority of American's support action, and particularly the one that stated 70% of NRA members are for background checks for all transactions.

Also, don't forget that very little official information has been released summarizing the motives and circumstances surrounding the two most recent shooting events, which have continued to be the context for these reforms.

Yes, it disconcerting to me as well that one thing the NRA and the administration can agree on is for more police forces.

We are on a slippery slope: police forces in schools, metal detectors, rfid chips at all times.

This is becoming the new normal.

And not a single one of those would have prevented the Sandy Hook shooting.

I am very pleased with the executive actions that President Obama took to reduce gun violence and I feel that in the long run, way down the road ahead, it will do a lot of good.

Can you elaborate on which provisions you think will do the most good to curb gun violence?

The EOs are fine, surprisingly. Of course Obama tried to make people think with their emotions but he basically just passed the mess and blame on to congress.

That means there just isn't much of a chance that panic buying that $2000 AR-15 last weekend is gonna pay off in the end.

All those steps Obama suggested do nothing but create bigger and more costly government. The only way to reduce and even eliminate violent crimes, whether guns, knives, baseball bats, or cars are involved, is raise children properly and let them know that there will be punishment for murder, both in this life, and possibly eternal life. Teach them that there is a meaning to one of the Ten Commandments that says: Thou Shall Not Murder, and let them know that there is nothing "cool" about being in a gang or spending time in prison.

Which ones do you support? Are there any you are against? Or is there more that you believe he could have done?

TBH, from what i've seen, firearm prices across the board have gone up, and in my opinion AR-15's and related weapons are not likely to come down in price any time soon due to the number that are on back-order. Magazines certainly will not.

Does that mean he's going to allow Mexico to extradite Eric Holder for supplying the weapons used in the massacre of 16 innocent Mexican teenagers at that Juarez birthday party a couple years ago?
