I had a Mini-14 up until 1994 and it was a reliable rifle, since it has the M1-Garand and the M14 style action. The accuracy was adequate for a rifle with such a short barrel.
If I remember correctly, I have heard of or seen Mini-14s with stainless steel barrels, this was in the early 1990s, I'm not sure if they still make them, but I think they were supposed to be more accurate than ones with regular steel barrels, and I think the stainless steel barrel had a tighter rifling twist rate, which of course will make the accuracy better.
I had a SS/wood mini....I loved the gun, it was fun, but it did seem to wonder a bit as it warmed up. I bought it as a fun gun so I didn't care. I didn't need a tack driver, however if I did, I would have just went for a custom.
I sold it trying to save my home a few years back...and greatly regret it.
Incidentally, Dianne Frankensteins gun ban would ban the tactical version but not the wood stocked version...looney! It just goes to show they have no clue.
For reference... Ruger made some changes to the mini-14 around 2005. The biggest was changing to a thicker-walled tapered barrel. The heavier barrel greatly improved the out-of-box accuracy of the rifle. Still, I don't compare the mini-14 to an AR platform, as they are different animals, each with their benefits and each with their fallacies.

The tactical version is scarier looking, and we all know that the appearance of a gun is the true determinant of its lethality.
Several years ago I had the opportunity to shoot a Mimi 14. I liked it, it was fun to shoot. It's not a gun that I would add to my inventory because there are much better guns out there and my pocket says. I can't own them all.
The mini is pretty popular around here on the ranches as a quick and accessible coyote gun. Most Ranch trucks have one hanging in the gun rack.
Having watched every episode of the A-Team (even that mal-aligned last season) as a kid, I want one. And I'm never going to fold the stock out, because B.A. Barracus never did. And I'll always shoot from the hip.
Most people bash them because they read something on the Internet . Ignorance abounds .
That's why I was curious. I have read they have been improved in the last few years, so some of the people bashing might not have experience with the newer models.
Doesn't matter for me though because I think I'm going to get a Garand.
