I think a 22 WSM is around the corner too. I'm going to get one of those Volquartsen rifles hoping that barrels will interchange. I wish they'd go .17, .20 and .22, something for all desires.
Then when I get time, look into necking one down to take a sewing needle. Just a fan of small bores just because...ahhhh like it.
I really think a "suppressed rimfire" round would be killer awesome. Something with a very long (say, .224" 80-90gr) bullet that fragments/expands at very low velocities (down to say, 800fps, you have to understand, a subsonic bullet .224dia and 80-90gr would retain this kind of velocity well past 100 yards if it left the muzzle at 1020. Drop would be the limiting factor for use on game, not frag/exp. envelope.), launched at 1020fps from a rimfire based on the .22 magnum case would be pure awesomeness! I think enough case capacity exists to do this.
I already have a .17 HMR in a Marlin 917V heavy bull-barrel bolt action. This new caliber won't be needed for guys who already own a .17 HMR. It already does EVERYTHING you want in between a .22 LR and a 5.56x45mm. It even already outperforms a .22 Magnum.

There is a wide variety of cartridges between .22 LR and a 5.56x45mm that outperform the .17 hmr.
The .17 hmr is a great round, but I think you are overselling it.

The only other things I have are a FN PS90 in 5.7x28mm and some Polish Tantal and Bulgarian AK-74s in 5.45x39mm. The 5.45x39mm isn't really in between though and the 5.7x28mm is a neat toy. For the eradication of pests, it's very hard to beat a .17 HMR with 17 grain V-Max ballistic tips fired out of a rifle. When a .22 LR won't cut the mustard, it's an easy choice. I'm not a .17 Mach 2 fan either.....it's not needed. Just use a .22 Magnum instead.

Maybe I misunderstood you. Are you saying saying that of the options that you have, it does everything better between a .22 LR and a 5.56x45mm? Or are you saying that the 17 hmr is better than everything else between .22 LR and 5.56x45mm?
