I went to Sportsman's Warehouse today at lunch to look around.
They had a few boxes of Remington 525 Golden Bullets and 500 ct. bulk bricks of Thunderbolts. They wanted $35.99 for the Golden Bullets and $37.99 for the T-Bolts.
Not only was this ammo under $15 a box before The Great Ammo Crisis of 2008 , but this is junk ammo. I hate to see what they'll charge for the CCI or Federal ammo once it comes in.
Still, it is nice to see 22LR returning to the shelves.
It's been plentiful in this area for a year or better now.......I stocked up (or, should say, "restocked") as it came back on the shelves at reasonable prices.
My local BiMart has had 22LR on the shelf for a couple of weeks now. They limit you to one brick or one hundred rounds at a time. Haven't seen any bricks, usually it's Federal 510 50rd boxes. Picked up a couple of boxes of American Eagle 40 grain round nose today. I have their copper washed version and it's OK, I wonder if this RN is any better. Only one way to find out...

Yeah, Bi-Mart seems to generally have some stock on the shelves at least for a day or two after unloading the trucks. Around here, Saturday they usually have some but Sunday they are generally sold out. Even got some CCI Hi-Velocity hollowpoints awhile back. Have not seen any Stingers since this nonsense started. Frequently they have Federal "Auto-Match" 325 round bulk packs for $17 and change.
Even when they are out of .22LR, they generally do have some .22Short. Having a couple of Short-specific chambered gats (a Beretta Minx, and a Belgian Browning self-loader, I don't remember the model designation, but the one that ejects straight down) I can take full advantage of these rather than use them in .22LR chambered barrels that have a faster than optimal twist for the 29 grain bullet.
My God. I haven't shot a .22 in decades. I was paying $10 a brick back then. Why has the price of .22s jumped so much as compared to other calibers?
1) They can't be reloaded and must be purchased new.
2) Prepper types believe they will be good barter currency after TEOTWAWKI and are stocking it up by the tens of thousands of rounds.
3) Supply and demand. Almost everyone who shoots owns at least one .22LR, so almost everyone who shoots buys .22LR ammo. Add in the serious ammo hoarders plus the people who formerly just went out and bought ammo on the way to the range but now have to have several thousand rounds on hand "just in case", and supply can't keep up.
4) A significant part is an artificial "false" demand. Gougers make sure to keep store shelves empty by camping out and buying everything up at stocking time. A normal shooter goes to buy ammo, but finds shelves empty. He looks online and the only thing he can find are the gougers re-selling for 2x or 3x store price. He thinks this is normal, so he buys a few boxes and complains about Obummer. And the cycle continues.
