Is anybody else sending out letters of interests and getting no interviews? I have heard there is a great deal of hiring in August. Does anyone know if this is true, and why would it be?

I know someobdy else who isn't getting any response either. If you teach at the beach, would you recommend I work someplace else? I have an interview for another city, but I really would like to stay in Virginia Beach.

VB does tend to hire late. Math, Science (HS) and Special Ed tend to get snagged early . . . are you looking for employment in these areas? You need to interview elsewhere too.

When I was hired 6 years ago I pushed the issue saying that I had offers elsewhere and they gave me an offer on the spot. I teach high school math and science.

There are openings, but the school population is decreasing slightly, so the job market here isn't as good as in Chesapeake or Suffolk.

Good luck

Default not those areas

I am seeking an elementary school position. Do you mean that Human Resources gave you a contract on the spot? I hear Norfolk will do that. In Virginia Beach you have to send out letters of interest and hope to get a call from the school to interview with the principal. I can't understand why people have told me that there is a big hiring in August. It makes me think that long ago they used to do it that way by offering contracts and then plugging you in someplace. I worked in Va. Beach before, and I would like to work here again.

Thanks for the advice. If you have anymore, please share it.

I received an early committment contract, which guaranteed me employment the following year (I interviewed in December). Elementary is much more difficult (my wife teaches there). I guarantee that they will be hiring in August. I have heard it directly from Principals. The odds are somewhat long (not 100 to 1 but probably 10 to 1) so be careful.

Hello. I am not a teacher but have children that go to a VB elementary school. I do know that they have registrations for class up to mid August and the need to hire new teachers do not arise until they have a total number in the class. This area has so many new students every year and many that move away over the summer due to the military population. There are teachers moved around due to less students and some hired every year to cover additional classes. It happens every year at our school and every other in the area. I would imagine that is one reason they hire on the spot just before the school term. Good luck!

I know this is a really old thread, but I wanted to know if the Virginia Beach STILL hires late into August as they used to in 2008. I recently applied to several special ed positions but haven't heard back. I'm out of state, our current lease expires soon, my husband would have to transfer, on and on. The later is gets in the summer the more chaotic this would get for us. I'm VA certifiec, but over 1000 miles away currently. I've had some responses from the other districts but no offers yet.
