My husband is getting a job in Norfolk, we are planning a trip down to look at places to rent. We really want a place on the coast with an oceanview. What I was wondering is what areas should I be looking at? What are the areas to avoid? I don't mind a 30-45 minute commute.

You won't have a 30-45 min commute with traffic if you want an ocean view. Well maybe if you live in Ocean View. It's a transitional area. I wouldn't live there too much flooding, and I'm not sure about the safety of the area.

Commute is really hard to say without knowing exactly where in Norfolk he would be working and what hours he would be working...
Personally, if money were no object, my top 3 areas to live by the ocean (or bay) would be:
North End of Virginia Beach
Sandbridge Beach
Shore Drive between the Lesnar Bridge and First Landing State Park
Ocean View is also an option but it is sketchy in some spots. Although, with your husband working in norfolk, that would probably be the closest and cheapest area with an ocean (bay) view.

I live in VB and work all the way in Hampton, I have a 30 minute commute because I leave early enough that the HOV lanes are open to all traffic. It really depends on where you live, where you work, and what time of day you are traveling.
