We are moving to Virginia Beach June 1 and I am due July 9th. What hospitals in the area deliver babies? Is one hospital better than another? I also am looking for an OB GYN. Any suggestions would be great.

Marybeth Dixon at the women's center in Norfolk is an excellent ob/gyn and has children of her own. The center is attached to DePaul-Bon Securs hospital. There is the Sentara Health Center as well on Volvo Parkway in Chesapeake. All the hospitals here are very good.

I'm viewing this more from a doctor perspective than a patient perspective, so take it from where it comes, but I did my training in the area and had a chance to work at 4 of the OB hospitals (and the naval hospital as well) in the area. For a lot of reasons, malpractice expense definately being one of them, options are somewhat limited as many hospitals don't do deliveries anymore.

If you are a high risk pregnancy, Norfolk General is the best place. It's more of a busy university hospital feel (though not as bad as some other cities) so may not be the best place for an uncomplicated pregnancy.
If you are a "normal" pregnancy, VA Beach General is where I'd recommend. DePaul hospital in Norfolk is also equally nice, where you live in VA Beach will depend on how far it is from you.
Leigh will probably be fine too but I didn't think it was as great a facility as the others. I wouldn't recommend against it, but I'd pick the others first.

Once you have established an OB/GYN, then you will have a hospital that they deliver at. As a woman, I can tell you we have great female doctors and you won't be disappointed!

When I had my baby I delivered at Va. Bch. Gen'l and it was NOT a good experience.

THey were short of staff and had an epideral (sp) and first one didnt work. It had to be re-done.. when they came back to due it they were very aggreviated and defensive that it had to be re-done.

NO accomodations for hubby to stay in the room,, not even a pull out bed.
While I was induced and took 24 hrs for labor and then another 24 in labor my
hubby had to rest on the FLOOR - we even asked for a pull out bed or
something. They said they had nothing.

The nurses were nice but short handed. I could go on and on.. but I won't.

I had my baby in 2003. Maybe things have changed.

Good luck! sorry couldn't be more help.

My wife worked for Sentara in the late 90's, and Sentara Leigh was recommended to us. We have had 2 children born there, one in '97 and one in '01, and were very pleased with the staff and facilities at that time. Hope that helps because it has been several years, and things change.

Leigh has great staff, of course my spouse works there, so I am a bit for that hospital. The outpatient staff is awesome as I go there for my yearly female stuff and I can't say anything bad about the radiology dept. I had knee surgery at VB General and the outpatient nurse was not to my expectations. The doctor or OS was very accommodating to my family and made sure I had a room in case I preferred or needed to stay overnight. Bayside Hospital on the other hand.....well let's just say, had they been AJ Squared away, they would have known I had an ACL break other than a sprained knee. They sent me home in an immobilizer and no crutches. Their excuse was that the doctor didn't prescribe any. Go figure!
