It's my daughter 6th birthday this weekend and I need a cake. Anyone have any good recommendations. I'm open to simple but good, or to exoctic and spendy "but also good too, of course." Any input would be greatly appreciated.

OMG..Farm Fresh does a great job with birthday cakes, especially for kids. They have some neat designs and the cake is very good.

My last experience with Farm Fresh involved me having to decorate my own cake (with their icing) because she chose at the last second to skip mine to do a friend of hers' cake. Good thing my old job taught me how to decorate cakes...

However, Kroger and Harris Teeter haven't done me wrong.

If you're on a budget, Wal-Mart actually has the same cake designs as most grocery stores - and there's almost always a person capable of personalizing a pre-made cake. ((They always have premade decorated cakes that sell really well, got a Care Bear one for a coworker just last year))

Now if you want a specialty bakery that's not in a chain grocery store, check out the Sugar Plum Bakery on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach. My two year old melts into pure joy everytime we go.

My vote's for Sugar Plum. I think I've gained 10 lbs. since discovering them and it's for a fabulous cause.

What about that place on Virginia Beach Blvd. near the Central Library. The name totally slips my mind but my mother always goes there to get me birthday cakes. Not bad at all, in my opinion.

We use our local Ukrop's for every occasion! We love it! They have the best cakes and the icing is so good that they actually sell the icing now in a plastic tub that you can buy for like $6 or something! I love their cakes but I will say that Farm Fresh has some really great looking cakes! FF seems more unique in their designs!
Good luck and Happy B-day!

Carnival on the blvd near the outlet stores has some great ice cream cakes. I used to have them specially made for my dog's birthdays.
