I'm sure I've seen a few lately, but not swarms by any means.
There are a lot of lively singing frogs nearby, which may have something to do with that.

Also, I may not be outside at the best time of night to see them...

Thumbs up Right after sunset...

...is usually the best time to see the lightning bugs and listen to the frogs. The experience is especially fun for the children.

Here in York County (near Langley AFB) we have TONS of lightening bugs. We have a lot of wooded areas around here so that might have something to do with it. Once they do the ariel spraying for mosquitoes the lightening bugs will be reduced though.

We see them and hear the frogs every weekend at the trailer. It is quite comforting listening to the frogs. I especially love watching the Egrets in the morning.

Yup, we have lightening bugs in Chesapeake, too. My sons just caught two of them tonight in our backyard.

I actually saw a few in the front yard the other night. That time of year for them around here.

I grew up and still live in the Tallwood area of Virginia Beach. When I was younger (15 years ago), there were a whole bunch in the neighborhood. You could chase several and catch them. But in 2009, not so much. I havent seen any but then again I dont think I'm out that late anymore.

There aren't as many here as there are in Pennsylvania. We were just up there visiting and the kids had a blast collecting them by the dozens. I think the spraying to kill mosquitos might be killing them too. That would explain why there are so few around.
