I'm thinking of doing some extended camping on various Hawaiian islands over time, and was wondering if there were any national or state-wide fitness center chains on the Islands. It seems like having a membership would make showering as well as exercising a lot easier/cheaper while touring.

Similarly, can one buy memberships to the University gyms? Or gain access to all Community College gyms if they have a membership or are taking a course at one?

Thanks

24-Hour Fitness has a pretty good foothold, but Google to check availability. A lot of Gold's have recently (past two years) given up their franchises and gone local. Other brands MAYBE a possibility, but I'd check with Hawaii locales in advance. Will leave the question of academic/university access to the posters here who are academics/professors. Double/triple check everything locally (with names and dates) if you are counting on this kind of reciprocity for your stay.

Best of luck.

Depends on the island as to how many gyms might be available. Frequently there are showers available at the beaches but those are also frequently cold open air showers. Good for washing off salt water, not so good for a good shower. You could try the public pools, they usually have private showers and you can swim for exercise.

When you turn on the water and go under it you say "AHH THIS IS COLD" and get out as soon as the salt is washed off

I assume full nudity is also frowned upon in the open-air, public beach showers. The cold water wouldn't help with presentation either.
