Many companies have banned the use of Skype on their computers.

An absolutely absurd policy. I encourage my Dept. to use Skype for long-distance conversations and video conferencing as there is no cost and the audio quality is excellent.

It could be that the company wants to know how dedicated you will be and how much you really want the position they offered you.

Did you see the news reports of the President using it just yesterday, speaking with several Americans ?

On the company, sounds quite odd. In real estate, there are even a few ploys out there, and bogus bait & switch cons. Not thinking negatively, but there seems to be a shoe for every foot these days trying a con over the internet.

If they offered you the job already, why do you want to skype?

What is it that they want you to fly over to do? Maybe they are not convinced that the communication or work could be accomplished by video conference. You could try talking with them, to ask them if they could give it a try on a normal conversation, and see if they believe it would accomplish what they need done.

But to ask you in return - why didn't this come up in the interviews? If you are applying for work to a company that is across the ocean, didn't either side ask how the work would be conducted? If you expected them to allow the work, or some of the work, to be done by remote, wouldn't you want to ask that question early on?

Not really that complicated. They probably just want to make sure you are a good fit for their organization, and that you will be satisfied working for them. Skype doesn't tell them how you interact or react to questions. It doesn't tell them how you interact with the team you will be working with. Those are very important things.

Look at it from this view point...
Skype doesn't tell you if they have no parking and you have to fight for spots and then walk half a mile to your office. It doesn't tell you if the building they are in is old and decrepit.

Sure, you may take the job initially to get out here, lots of people do that. But if you don't like the place, you may leave in 6 months. Ok for you, but bad for the company.

Dthraco, agreed.

In addition, there is another factor which very well could be at work here... the rate at which people flake out from job opportunities here is off the chart. People on the mainland accept jobs in the islands and then bail out once they confront everything it takes to get moved and set up in the islands. Or they move over but bail out after a short time when life doesn't fit their fantasies. It's such a common problem that many companies simply don't hire anyone who doesn't make a physical appearance first.
