My husband and I are planning on moving to Hawaii this summer. Before that happens, we are waiting for a teaching position. My husband filled out all teaching applicant forms, and even had an interview with one of the schools last summer. So he is officially listed as "active" in the school system. My question is, when do teachers get hired for the upcoming school year? I know school starts at the end of July so I'd think it would be no later than June...right? I wish we'd be totally set in May....that's be nice!

most schools end in may here so doubtful on that, though i should check with my aunty as she is actually a teacher here. though depending on which island, what level of teaching, public/private etc it will be difficult to find a job as a teacher. economy is still hurting. even the locals have trouble. many gov/state jobs are having furloughs for employees so i would expect the wait to be a long one. maybe someone else will have more input on when they start hiring but many schools dont hire new teachers every year. again all depends on where you want to go etc. if you had some more info on which island etc. that would be helpful too

Thanks for your help! I've looked everywhere on the web and nothing says when they hire for the next year. We would love to be in Maui. But we really want to make it to Hawaii, and beggars can't be choosers, so really, any island would be great, even the smaller ones. I heard that Hawaii has a high turnover rate, and that there are over 1,000 positions opened per year. I hope they're right! The level of teaching we are looking for is 1-8th grade, which is a good broad range I think. We're aiming towards a public school, my husband wouldn't mind a private school either.
