Hello! I am considering a move to Hawaii and am interested to know more about the gay culture there. I am a dive instructor and writer and am interested to know anyone's opinions who live or have lived there. I know Honolulu and Waikiki have a fairly large gay scene, but are there other places as well that anyone could recommend researching? I am looking for somewhere where there is a predominant gay culture as well as fairly easy to meet other young gay men. Thanks!

Puna is known as being particularly gay-friendly and has quite a few gay residents, especially Pahoa on down to Kalapana, but I couldn't call it predominantly Gay, nor would I say that about Waikiki either.

I don't think Waikiki / Honolulu has a large "gay scene" at all. There are a couple gay bars in Waikiki but not much. I think the city is accepting, and i think there are a good number of gay people living in the city, but there's not much of an open scene.

If you are looking for an accepting and tolerant place, Honolulu and Waikiki are generally ok. But if you are looking for a large gay scene you won't find it. Certainly not like you would find in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los angeles or San Diego, to name a few other places.

At least that's my perception.

Not many gays here on the Big Island. And if so, mostly in committed relationships and older.
