I find it hard to believe that the Hawaiians didn't have a word for "home". Why would it be a loan word from English? I've Googled and can't find an answer. I can't be the only person wondering this!

Also, is it just coincidence that the word for "of" is "o", just like the abbreviated/Irish version of the word in English?

I looked up the word home in our Hawaiian dictionary and it says, "kauhale". However, I then looked up the word kauhale and it says, "A group of houses composing a Hawaiian home.

Jonah K, HELP!

Thanks Honolulu21!
I thought hale was just a building. But thanks to you I looked it up and it does say, "house, building".

Yes which is different than home-- Home is where you live, every hale isn't your home.

Kauhale seems to mean village. There's a condo complex called Kauhale Makai which they translate as Village by the Sea

Hmmmmmmm.... But it does say "house" as the first definition of hale. Then when you look up the word house in the english dictionary the first definition is, "a building for human habitation, esp. one that is lived in by a family or small group of people."

Where the heck is Jonah K when we need him?

Or Kauhale can also mean a group of houses since the ancient Hawaiians had separate houses for different activities. One was for women when they were going through menstruation, another for men eating together (it was forbidden under the kapu system for men and women to eat together), etc., etc..

This system is explained at this link: + Hawaii Alive | Topics: Early Hawaiian Society +
