Just wondering if there are any pilots on the forum. If so, are any of you interested in homebuilt aircraft? How about gliders and Light Sport Aircraft? Helicopters or gyrocopters?

And how about private airfields? Anyone know of any that may or may not allow others to use their strips?

Just wondering.

Mickey

Yup, I'm a pilot, and yes I am interested in all those categories of aircraft. I have a partially completed Van's Aircraft RV-7 in my basement.

I have no knowledge of private airport access in the Hawaiian Islands though.

I am a pilot, although I am inactive and haven't flown in a few years. I would love to pick it up again some day, but the cost keeps me from doing that.

Private airfields depends on the circumstance. I know here in Upstate NY, several people may go in on a private field together, so maybe 4 of them actually own the field. It wouldn't hurt to contact an owner of a private field to see what the cost would be to go in on part ownership to be able to use the field. Private fields in Hawaii may be a whole different ball game though based on the importance of land ownership.

I believe PacificFlights is a pilot as well

You can land at Upolu point as well as probably Kamuela. Kamuela may have fuel, maybe not, dunno. Upolu point doesn't have any but if you had a buddy with a fuel truck it could meet you there. There are several old landing strips from the cane company days, but most of them have been overgrown and would have to be cleared before anyone could land anything on them. Well, a parachute could land there or perhaps a helicopter of some sort.

Both of those airports are public-use, not private.

Kinda figured you are a pilot SkyBob . I probably should have added smaller public airports to my list of questions.

The RV-7 is a nice plane. I'm not a pilot - yet - and since I turn 74 this June, I may never be but I've been interested in aviation for years.

I'm kinda partial to the Hummel line of aircraft (see Hummel Aviation - Bryan, Ohio ), the Hummelbird, Ultracruiser and the new H5, which was the Ultracruiser Plus and has been redesigned as the H5.

Here's a list of airports in Hawaii - Airports in Hawaii | SkyVector

If you want more info, I'd look them up on Airnav.

If you just want to fly for fun, getting your private doesn't take that much. I don't know what island you're on, but Oahu has a few FBOs that you could take training courses at.

I work in aviation and I'd say that Vans is the most common home-built aircraft that I see.

Hawaii Airports - Airport Guide

There are very few private strips on the Big island.

Or go directly to the source:

Digital Airport/Facility Directory

Aviation doesn't pay very well on the Mainland so it'd be even more difficult on the Islands.

Thanks for the links Becca and md. I am still in Ohio, darn it , though I would rather be in Hawaii.

I would think a light plane/helicopter/gyrocopter would be a great way to get around the state of Hawaii. Could be lots of fun too.
