To all who are not in Hawaii right now, please plan a trip soon. There are great deals on air, car rentals and Hotels. If you have never been and are dreaming of it, please please please find a way.

Our Government in Washington has done Hawaii a huge disservice by telling corporations they can't hold meetings and they really shouldn't "go to resorts." AIEEEEEE. First, meetings help people connect, find new solutions, get to know each other, work better as a team, understand new technologies and new information, and lift people's spirits. Going to a place like Hawaii is seen as a carrot and it makes people want to work harder, produce more, sell more, and keep the corporation in business. Why Meetings Matter > Home

If all the people who have dreamed of visiting Hawaii for the first time (or one more time) would go, the State would be OK. As it is, unemployment is at it's highest since 1983, people are working a couple of jobs to make it, and the stress level is really high.

So - BTW, if you go, be nice to anyone waiting on you. They tired, brah. But if you smile and make nice, they will be happy you are there.

I'm doing my part. I'll be there in Sept, Oct, and December.

See you all in the air or on the beach!

tanx, eh?

Actually, not having that many tourists is a good thing. It gets folks busy finding jobs to do that are not tourist based. Everyone has known for decades that our economy is depends too much on tourists yet no non-tourist businesses have been encouraged. Once we get some sort of economy going that is not dependent on tourists we will have a much stronger economic base. Tourist based jobs are all in the service sector and pay minimum wage or not much above it. That's one reason why folks here work so much, it is because they get paid so little.

We also have peak oil either here already or just around the corner. What will Hawaii do when tourists can't afford to fly in anymore? We have cruise ships now, but when they show up all the folks stay on the cruise ships and don't spend much money on the islands. Not that what they spend on their hotel room counts as money spent on the island, though. All that hotel and rent-a-car money - with the exception of the service wages paid to the employees - goes off to the corporate headquarters somewhere else.

However, it is a good time to visit if you can afford it. Hotel prices are low and everyone else is giving deals trying to get folks to show up. Although a lot of places have closed already so there will be less restaurants, tours, etc. But about eighty percent are still there and still struggling so they will be happy to see tourists.

Property taxes, the managers, assistant managers, advertising , public relations, gasoline and mechanics for those rental cars .... Much more than what you say.
