Absolutely not. We pay for our insurance through my husband's company and he does not even have hearing aids covered. Get over and pay for them yourself like the rest of us. Another entitlement we don't need to give out.
The title of this thread is exactly what's wrong with Medicare, which is headed rapidly for insolvency. Medicare simply cannot provide everything which everybody needs. Mission creep has bankrupted our nation, and it started with President Johnson's "great society" of guns and butter. Back in that day Medicare provided hospitalization only - doctors' visits were on us. We somehow made do.
Tek_Freek has a good point about peoples' hypocrisy, so in the interest of disclosure let me say I could use a hearing aid, but have so far resisted getting one, as I'm able to function well even if I sometimes ask people to repeat. But no, I don't think Medicare should pay for it just because I will eventually have to get one. Medicare simply cannot be everything to everybody - it's not realistic.
Well said. Really - people who think they entitled - when will it end?????
I think it'd be awesome if medicare AND other insurance would contribute a certain amount -toward- hearing aids and eye glasses or contact lenses, when medically recommended to correct hearing and vision loss. Maybe if they contributed up to once every 3 years for a new eyeglass prescription and once every 10 years toward new hearing aids. Even if it were just $200, it would be a nice thing.
But no, I don't expect, or think anyone "deserves" to have hearing aids reimbursed or covered by any insurance. Hearing isn't a medical necessity. In fact, there's a whole political group of deaf people who feel that deafness isn't a disability at all, and consider the label offensive, and get offended whenever they encounter discussion involving "correcting" their hearing loss. They reject the entire notion. I'm totally NOT among that group - I certainly do consider hearing loss to be a disability. But I don't consider it to be life threatening, or dangerous, or risky, and I also find it liveable most of the time. For the rest of the time, I have my choice of hearing aids, or asking people to repeat themselves slowly and clearly, facing me so I can read their lips.

So let me get this straight: You are for Medicare which is going broke and that poor people rely on to pay something toward glasses, contacts, hearing aids; but insurance which is paid for by individuals should not pay. Hmmmm.

Erm, at the present time, neither Medicare nor private insurance cover hearing aids or contact lenses (except vision care, which I forgot about, but it's a seperate insurance).
I am not "for" or "against" anything. I thought I posted it pretty simply, for even a kid to understand. I'll reiterate:
I think it would be a NICE THING if both Medicare and private insurance were to kick in a few bucks toward the overall cost of hearing aids. I don't think they *should* do it. I just think it'd be a nice thing.
So let me get this straight - you took what I said, and turned it into a criticism of me. Hmmmm...

Everybody knows Medicare does not pay for these things so why would you wish it. Not a very good idea to wish for anything. This is not fantasy land we are dealing with. Just the thought that you would think it would be a nice things is absurd. Now do you understand. I know a kid would.

That's the topic of this thread: Do you think (believe, feel, opine) that hearing aids should be covered? And my answer is: no, I don't think it *should* be covered. If it were, that'd be great. But I don't think it *should.* I didn't even say I wish medicare would offer it. I said it would be nice if they did. Sort of like, it'd be nice if it rained every afternoon at 4PM and dried up again by 5.
This thread has nothing to do with facts. It has to do with peoples' opinions. Opinions were sought. I offered mine. What's the problem?
What does Viagra being covered by private health insurance have to do with hearing aids being covered by medicare?
