This article from NPR illustrates the fact that the same things cost far more in the American health care system than anywhere else. It costs $13,000 to have a hip replacement done in Belgium. In the United States that same procedure is over $100,000 (7 X as much).

Whether we have Obamacare, a single payer system, or a national health service like Britain, the truth is the fundamental problem in America is simply cost. Whatever system we put in place has to do two things:

1. Cover everyone; 2. Do so at a lesser cost than we have been paying.

In the last century health care costs have gone up a huge amount.

Is anyone doing anything to reduce these costs?

We have recently added a vast array of new things into Healthcare: Insurance, MRIs, Cat-scans, blood-gas testing, ...

I think that every year new procedures are being added into the mix.

We have never seen this level of healthcare, nor this level of expense.

Because here in the states you have 10 people standing between yourself and your doctor, all with their hand out. Gate keepers and tolls, one big GD money orgy. Here in the states you have a huge doofus class who will claim the Gubmint is interferring while the blameless scumbag for-profit insurance companies scheme up more ways to complicate the delivery of health care in order to extract more cash from the public.

In this area, as the local hospital network has been deciphering the new health care laws. They have formed new offices of Nurse Managers who now act as gate-keepers between hospital and insurance.

They setup the criteria thresholds for who gets procedures and which ones are covered by insurance.

My Dw and I have both recently had surgeries and that was how it was explained to us.

Don't get me started on our great all American money grabbing "Hospital Cartels" and above all lets not forget the biggest gold diggers of them all "pharmaceutical Industry" If a working American gets seriously caught up in all three, kiss your ass and everything you own adios. The American health care delivery system may cure your physical issues, but unfortunately the mental stress will kill you.

The ONLY entity that needs insurance are the providers.
The doctors and hospitals need to know that their bills will be paid.
But we don't need BC/BS and the others to do that.

Until we eliminate BC/BS and the others we'll continue to be at their mercy.
They and their lobbyists like it this way.

Of all the health insurance companies out there BCBS is my favorite. Its beginnings was founded as a non-profit. It was sued many years ago by the for-profit health insurance companies and was forced to fix its prices close to the for-profits, because BCBS's rates where much much lower. This is one reason why Anti-Trust does not apply to health insurance companies, so they can collude and fix prices.

Interesting. In our state BC/BS has the highest premiums...but then again, all health insurance companies here have to be not for profit.
