Hi this year as I was renewing my health insurance my health insurance is suddenly asking for a copy of my social security card and a copy of my drivers license. I have had this insurance for a few years now and they have my social security number already on file so why are they now asking for an actual copy? and of my drivers license? I am very paranoid about sending them such sensitive information because of the identity theft problems these days but they are saying they may discontinue my coverage if i dont send the necessary information. I cant just go in person because my insurance company is not close to me. So my question is what is the best thing to do in this type of situation and do they really need this when they already have my info on file?

There is a reason for that. Beginning this year, health plans have to send the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) information about health plan members and their insurance coverage, including their Social Security number (or other tax identification number). It's one of the requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

I am aware of this but my question was why do they need "actual copies" of the documents when they have the information on file already when i applied for the insurance?

Insurance fraud....

Why do they want the copies, to prove it is actually you. Doing insurance audits to prove the people on the plans are actually them have been going on for several years. Having the number on file is not enough, you can write down any number, how do they know it's actually your number? Your DL is for photo proof it is you. Keep in mind, this is for your protection.

My doctor's office has me show my DL every time I go, for security reasons.

OP I have to ask - if your insurance company already has your correct SS number, why are you so worried about giving them a copy of your SS card?

They are now asking for this to keep in their electronic files. In the past they only needed the number, now they need the actual proof.

a SS card is not proof of ID and should not be necessary.

So long as the IRS or other credit checking agencies successfully match you and your number i don't see a particular reason the actual cardboard SS card should be sought.
