I think the practice started so companies or organizations didn't have to work at assigning member numbers since the ss# is unique for each person. It was just easier for them to use your ss#. In hind sight of course not such a good idea. Let us know what they say. You may also want to call and talk to someone at your state social security office.

I remember a number of years ago when video rental places were still around one of them wanted my ss# to sign up, ah... No thank you.

Carriers are required to use HIPAA compliant ID numbers. Your ID card should no longer list your SSN.

I know they are in the process of changing but Medicare still uses SS numbers.
