I'm confused on what is the best way to keep health coverage during my move from Houston, TX to Southern California. I did call my current insurance (BCBSTX) and they said they have no coverage out of state. Therefore will I need to purchase private insurance before I move to CA and end my BCBSTX coverage so that I don't end up paying for 2 premiums?
You simply have the insurance for a specific period - your start your new policy as of x-day (the first of the month) - you don't (and shouldn't) tell them on the last day - you are over-thinking this.
So basically cancel the old policy as I'm boarding the plane to CA and have the new policy start the same day?
No, you arrange to have the old policy end on one day and the new policy start the following day.
