Last February we purchased a 12 month dental plan through our local dentist. No surprise we cannot use it because of the virus and other health concerns and even WHO says to delay dental care. My DH says we just lost our money but I think we should ask for a refund or at least a credit of some type.

What are your thoughts?
I would find another dentist if he doesn't refund at least a portion of the premiums.
I have dental insurance with MetLife. They refunded a portion of my dental premium due to non-usage. They also refunded a portion of my auto insurance due to lower usage. Fortunately they didn't increase my home insurance due to increased usage!
Shhh. I'll keep it a secret if you don't tell my homeowners insurance either.
I didn't want to return to this dentist anyway as I wasn't sure that his hygentist used clean instruments last time I was there. I am concerned when I just hear paper rattle but she kept her back turned as I was in the chair. After she finished with me I noticed she rearranged the instruments but did not pick them up from the tray.
Dental plans have a validity date the dentists are not concerned about whether it is used or not. It is really surprising that MetLife returned your premium.

I used to work as a dental assistant. The instruments are kept on the tray after use, and the entire tray is brought into the sterilization lab for processing. The paper you heard was her taking the instruments out of their autoclave bags. The instruments go through an ultrasonic cleaner or a chemical disinfection process first, then they're put in new autoclave bags. They go through the autoclave in the bags, and when the cycle is complete, the blue stripe on the bag turns red (or whatever color-change combination they happen to have). Plastic items that aren't disposable go through a chemical sterilization process. In the office I worked in, it consisted of soaking them in the sterilizing agent overnight and then putting them through a rinsing process.
Trust me, everything that goes in your mouth (or that touches anything that goes in your mouth) at any dental office has been disinfected and sterilized if it is not disposable.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that MetLife refunded my entire dental insurance premium. it was a percentage of the annual premium. Not a lot, but it made me feel good that at least they were trying to help me.
I may get flamed for this, but almost all of my insurance is with MetLife and I have found them to be honest and fair regarding claims and coverage. I sold a car and they sent me a pro-rata refund of the insurance premium within 3 days after I notified them of the sale.
I didn’t use mine, 2 cleaning and I only did one, I got no refund, but this next year premium is reduced by 2 dollars per month.
