Today, I filled out the application online for SSS benefits to start in January.

When do I choose a drug coverage plan and medigap? Do I need to wait until they finish processing my application? I would like for the coverage to start in January.

Assuming you are now retired. With your SS you also applied for Part A & Part B for Medicare. Assuming you are approved for coverage to begin in January.

Will need Social Security to pay your Part B Medicare premium & you have no Part A premium.

So now you can shop any insurance co for your Medigap & Part D plan. The insurance co will need to know dates for your Part A & Part B Medicare. If you need it January 1 time to do it now.

For most you have a 7 month window in initial application to do this. You can plan to have coverage beginning the next month.

When you say "SSS" benefits do you mean Social Security retirement benefits or SSI (Supplemental Security Income)? They are different.

Social Security and Medicare are different programs. You can be on one and not the other or on both. You don't have to get (or qualify for) Medicare just because you are on Social Security.

You said you filed now for benefits to start in January. I don't think that if you file for Social Security retirement benefits in December that you get a payment in January. Benefit payments are paid the following month, for example the January payment is for December.

Can't really answer your questions without knowing what you mean by "SSS" and your age. If you mean Social Security retirement benefits then your age matters. You can get benefits at 62 but you won't be eligible for Medicare until you are 65.

sorry i meant social security retirement benefits.

Why is the January payment for December?
When I filled out the online application for social security benefits, it asked when I wanted to start receiving benefits. I chose January 2024. I'm still waiting for the application to be processed. Online shows they are on step 3 of 3 steps. This hasn't moved in over a week.

I did try to pick a medigap and drug plan, but the questions they asked I did not understand which answer to pick.

This whole process is confusing and frustrating. I retired at the end of the year in 2023. I am now without a paycheck and no insurance. I recently found out that I could have started the benefits application 4 months before my retirement date. Why don't the make it more clear because this was not obvious from the information I looked at online and medicare .gov.

Applying for SS and for Medicare/Medigap coverage are different processes.

As for health insurance, every state has an office that helps Medicare eligible citizens evaluate and choose Medigap/advantage plans. Here's how to find yours:

Social Security is paid in arrears. You have to be alive, or the age, a full month before you receive benefits based on that month.

EX: I turned 62 the end of June. My first check was deposited the third Wednesday of August based on being 62 all of July.

Conversely, when you die the check you receive the next month will be refunded back, you weren't alive the entire month.

There are a couple exceptions based on the first day and the last day on the month.

EX: Mrs. NBP's birthday is on the first of April. She got her first check in May for April.

I found out the answer to my question.

I had to fill out a form to apply for Original Medicare Part B along with another form that my employer filled out confirming i had medical insurance with them before I retired. I took the forms to my local Social Security office.

In less than a week this was processed and my Social Security website showed I was enrolled in Part B starting February 2024.

January 30 I received a Benefit Verification Letter from Social Security Administration. The date of this letter is needed to apply for a drug plan and medigap.

Thank myself.

Update to my update:

This evening I received a text from my bank saying $X,XXX was deposited to my bank account from SSA treasury social security. I didn't think I was getting a payment in January. When I applied, I chose to start my payments in January 2024. When I talked to someone from social security a week ago, I was told that my first payment would be the third Wednesday in February (payment for January). The letter says benefits for a given month are paid the following month.

I'm confused.

Sounds like your SS is starting in December with a payment the 3rd week of January. I don't know if you can confirm this online or if you should run down to your local office where they may be able to send the payment back until it gets deposited the 3rd week in February.

I believe my hub was doing the same. I think he also got his first payment already too. He may have even had two payments IIRC when he told me he got his first deposit. He had planned for it to start in January with first payment in February. He was at FRA.

He still works so he has health insurance through his employer.
