Hi,
Any suggestions for someone who never goes to Doctors and uses alternative medicine or integrative physicians (many do not deal with insurance companies)
I am 50 yrs old, healthy, good BP, weight etc. A few little things here and there but overall healthy.
I go once a year to my integrative physician for a yearly check up, labs etc Depending on a few things it costs me out of pocket around 350.00.
HOWEVER in the event of a catastrophic event I have no insurance.
Honestly I just cannot justify spending these outrageous prices I see others paying. Plus I do not have a wonderful Government job that pays the bulk of insurance.
I want to get health insurance just because:
I have friends who think I should have it
I need it in case something catastrophic happens
They may make it a law soon.

Any suggestions?
I live in NY state.
Thank you in advance for suggestions.

I really wish I could help you and I'd like to applaud you that you are in such great shape. Do you have many assets to protect? If not, I just might keep on doing what you are doing. Maybe others will have better ideas.

I know when my COBRA runs out I'll be looking at premiums of 600 or 700 hundreds dollars a month for catastrophic only. I better find a job soon or I am going to be faced with this. I do have health conditions and assets to protect so I guess I have no choice.

Honestly puglywump, I do not even want to pay 600-7000 of my hard earned money for health insurance. I feel as if I might as well flush it down the toilet.
This is very frustrating for me.
Thanks for your response though.

Average health insurance premiums

http://www.ahipresearch.org/pdfs/Individual_Market_Survey_December_2007.pdf (broken link)

You live in a high cost state for health insurance due to the cost of living and New York's insurance regulations.

Contact an insurance broker near you. Google insurance broker for info. I went from paying over $10,000 a year for myself and 3 kids to paying a litle over $3000,00 a year. I have a deductible now but we never get sick and I would rather pay for my annual visit than pay what I was paying. Hope that helps!

Try Humana-one. You can get a policy with decent rates if you are willing to have a very high deductable. This might be just what you are looking for since you want to insure the catastrophic event and not every day care.

We're in the same situation as you: very healthy, we exercise, eat wisely, take some vitamins, minerals and supplements, and have a holistic, preventative approach to our wellness.

No pre-existing conditions. Normal weight. Rarely go to the doctor except for check-ups--which come out great.

We opted for the highest possible deductible for our insurance and though it's not 'cheap' it's the best we could do. Our area has only one carrier for insurance plans for the self-employed such as we. We live in a small town far away from large cities.

We've considered going without insurance, and actually had for a couple of years, but as the OP said, we do have assets, and there are the unexpected things that can happen such as car accidents or having an appendicitis attack or something out of the blue.

Hate, hate paying the premiums, of course, but it's peace of mind.

Consider yourself lucky honestly, I am a healthy 24 year old male who rarely uses my health insurance and it is $227 a month, my father who is a healthy 50 year old like yourself with almost no doctor visits pays $470 per month, and I've tried to switch insurance companies but have been denied because of a hospital visit 2 years ago so ultimately I am stuck with anthem going up, up, up every year.

I used to be cautiously for the health reform bill. It had the potential for reducing costs overall, and the ability of those 55 and older to buy into medicare would have been a godsend. I had a lower priced health insurance policy and upon careful review discovered it had more holes in it than swiss cheese. Money is tight, the premiums kept rising, and it got to the point that I had to drop it. I might have been able to justify buying in to medicare because it doesn't have all the lawyer loopholes that make insurance companies rich.

Then comes that sleeze-ball greasy bit of slime called Joe Lieberman, a man reviled by Republicans and Democrats alike. He has forced out the medicare option, and coming from Conn job, a state with some HUGE insurance companies, just turned the health reform bill into exactly the opposite of what it should be.

Taking a note from the PDF cited above, "The states with the three highest premium averages – Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York – all require community rating and guaranteed issue. Premiums in Massachusetts were the highest in the nation and were roughly three times higher than the national average for the individual market."

Once health insurance is required, without a public option or medicare buy-in, the rates for all the other states will increase to the levels of those three states. Looks like I'll be going to jail, because I can't afford that crap.

There are times when I wish someone would take the entire Congress building with senators and representatives inside, and send them to some distant star system without any means of communication.
