A UNC researcher discovered that by giving HIV patients a drug normally used to treat some lymphomas that he could make hidden HIV viruses reveal their presence. It's the first time researchers have been able to trigger the virus like that.
This is a huge step. The fact that scientists are actually able to target the virus means a lot. Now they will be able to reveal it and hopefully do further research on how to prevent it. HIV is a terrible virus that deserves attention.
I agree. This is a big step. HIV/AIDS awareness has dwindled as a heath concern in the US. It is overshadowed by obesity, cancer, and other health concerns. I believe that it is just important for Americans with HIV/AIDS to be supported as it is for those in third world countries. Even with the advances in medicines and treatments, it is a devastating virus for those affected and their families.
