It's funny, but I always hear so many people say "I'm tired of being tired". oftentimes, I wonder if it is just because they don't get enough sleep.

However, I'm also a little concerned, as I seem to need more sleep while I'm getting older, when I thought I was supposed to need less. It seems if I get 10 hours of sleep, I wake up non-groggy, and reasonably refreshed. If I get 8 (normal night), I hit my snooze button at least twice before getting up.

A bit of background - I am in my early 40's, am slightly overweight, and keep fairly active, with no health issues. I've also recently had an insurance blood screening, which suggests that there are no underlying medical conditions causing my fatigue.

Just curious, especially for you other 40-somethings, how much sleep do you need?

I'm 40, guess that counts as "40-something" ?

I recently went on meds. which happen to interrupt my sleep, so I'm even more aware of my need for X amount of rest.
The meds. don't prevent me from falling asleep, but they seem to cause me to wake up several times during the second half of my sleep shift/period.
Before anyone asks, I take the medication during day, bc. the dr. says it can cause stimulation (aka wakefulness)-
yet it still interferes with my sleep-and I have disclosed this to the dr.
If it were bad enough I would request the dr. have me try some other medication.

Sorry for the tangent there, back to the OP-

8 hours is my preferred amount (at which I operate at full capacity), I cannot function with less than 5 per night.
However, if OP needs 10 hours, then that's valid-as what is right for one person isn't necessarily the same for another person.
Have you discussed this change in your needs with your doctor (apart from having the blood tests) so as to generate possible reasons why ?

Ooooh, that is good. My wife complains that I snore quite a bit - wonder if sleep apnea might be an issue here?

According to sleep specialists, all snoring is abnormal. Causes can be apnea, stopped up nose, deviated septum. Only if you know your nose is stuffy should you ignore snoring.

Your doc can order an overnight oximetry test, where you wear a clip on your finger which is wired to a recorder. When they read the recording, it will show your oxygen levels during the night. Anything less than 90% is cause for concern. Then you need a full sleep study to see how bad it is and what needs to be done. Covered by insurance as testing is cheaper than paying for your stroke or heart attack care.

I used to wake up groggy and drink 2 diet cokes to get going. One night on CPAP was a miracle! I woke up refreshed, simething I could nit ever remember doing.

I never feel like any amount of sleep is good enough.

If I sleep too little, I'm tired. If I sleep too much, I'm tired. I actually think oversleeping (10/12 hours) makes me feel worse---mentally and physically. I'm noticeably out-of-sorts and my body aches more. I like to try for around seven hours but some days I just can't get out of bed.

I don't snore (at least not yet LOL) but my friend also sent me an article about how many women with sleep apnea often never get tested because they do not display typical symptoms---do not really snore, aren't overweight, etc. Maybe one day...

I am 59 and I find I need more sleep as I get older, not less. If I don't get enough I nod off watching tv in the early evening for awhile.

Actually that is a really good point. I have sleep apnea and sleep with a CPAP machine. It makes a big difference in how you feel the next day when you sleep with one on.

Anything over 6 hours is like Christmas for me. It's 4am and I'm still wide awake. (Well actually I really don't like Christmas but I don't sleep much either.)
