I've never had any sort of eye infection before but this morning woke up with a bloodshot left eye, puffy eyelid and some minor itching and pain. No discharge. Cold compresses feel good but don't seem to be helping with the puffieness. I assume this is conjunctivitis aka pink eye?

Anything I should be doing or not doing? I'd rather not go to the urgent care clinic if I don't have to. (Obviously I will if it gets worse, or weepy or something.)

Thanks!

Go to your pharmacist and ask for the OTC ointment for pink eye/styes. It's pretty effective.

Oh I didn't realise there was OTC stuff for it. Thanks!

When I was a kid my mother always had us just press a warm, moist washcloth on our eye multiple times a day until it went away.

It sure makes it feel better! And I think it helps draw out the infection.

When I had pink eye last year the doctor told me that close to 90% of pink eye cases are viral and will resolve on their own. They give out the drops just in case you are in the 10% that isn't. I would just continue with the hot compresses.

Yep, it's already better. I've been doing warm compresses. Thanks!

One more thing, assuming you are female, you should get rid of any mascara and eyeliner you wore while you were infected, or even a few days before. Also disinfect your makeup brushes.

Yep, I read that, I am female.
I think it's allergy-related. I never used to have allergies before but in the last few years I get all stuffed up and itchy in spring and fall. I've been sneezing and itchy eyes since the day before Thanksgiving.
